Freezing is good because if you manage to keep your dwarves safe and warm inside a locked, invaders will get frostbites and die before the gates. WebAug 13, 2015 · 1. You want the water on the same level as the source or below. 2. You want to move the water upwards. 3. You want to move a reasonably small amount of water elsewhere. Note that I'm a coward, so I try to minimize risk to individual dorfs as well as the fortress. You may find my measures too cumbersome for your taste.

Something most people forget is that temperate means that a place has a generally wide range of weather, not too extreme either way but you'll still get some freezing in the winter and evaporating in the summer.

I suggest building a cistern and filling it with ponds around the map, then, let the rain fill the ponds back up. I hate embarking in hot places but I still like high drainage (for tree-heavy biomes when high-rain is also present). Murky pools lose their water far too fast for evaporation at the top end of drainage.
